Melbourne-Santiago route set to take off in 2017

Asia, Europe, North America – Melbourne-based travellers are lucky enough to be able to get to most corners of the world in just one flight. However, there was one continent that remained elusive for those in Victoria – South America. Until now.

In early December, Melbourne Airport announced that, from October next year, LATAM Airlines would begin flying between the city and Santiago. The direct flight would remove the need for passengers to travel via Brisbane or Sydney and would open up a significant portion of the world for exploration.

Aircraft technology helps Victorian travellers

Part of the reason why this didn't happen sooner was the sheer distance between Melbourne and Santiago. At a whopping 11,269 km, most planes couldn't make the distance without requiring a stop for fuel. However, with the extended range of the 313-seat Boeing 787-9, flying the route is now possible.

Melbourne Airport Chief Executive, Lyell Strambi, explained the other technology that has improved over recent years.

"New engine technologies, advances in wing design and the use of lightweight carbon composite materials in aircraft construction have combined to increase the range of smaller aircraft, opening up new point-to-point markets for airlines no longer constrained by the need to fly via major hubs with larger aircraft.

South America – the land of adventure

The ability to fly from Melbourne to Santiago in one flight is fantastic for those interested in the unique culture, traditions and landscapes of South America. However, the region is also popular with adventure tourists, according to figures from Roy Morgan Research.
